Marine Lyndon Mosley Shot in Mississippi While Home on Leave, But Survived; Jordan Williams Charged with Aggravated Assault (November 29, 2016)

Marine Lyndon Mosley was shot in the face while home on leave in Mississippi on November 29, 2016. Mosley is stationed at Camp LeJeune in North Carolina but he was home on leave visiting a daughter who had just been born. Mosley survived and reports indicate that he is recovering slowly. Jordan Williams turned himself in, admitted to the shooting, and was arrested. Williams was charged with aggravated assault. As of 2019, there was no further information available regarding the prosecution or sentencing of Jordan Williams.

Fort Hood Army Pvt. Kevin Paulino, 24, died of a gunshot wound in Peru, Indiana on November 16, 2016. Pvt. Paulino’s home of record is listed as Bronx, New York and he entered military service in May 2016. He was an infantryman assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas. According to the Killeen Daily Herald, civilian police confirmed Pvt. Paulino’s cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Army Pfc. David Winchester, 21, was found dead in his Fort Bragg barracks in North Carolina on November 16, 2016. Pfc. Winchester of Adamsville, Alabama was a biomedical equipment specialist; he joined the Army in April 2015. Pfc. Winchester was assigned to the 601st Area Support Medical Company, 261st Multi-functional Medical Battalion, 44th Medical Brigade at Fort Bragg. The Army sent out a media advisory to Associated Press announcing that agents with the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) were investigating the incident. The official cause of death is unknown.

Spc. Phillip Cruz-Medellin, US Army, was found dead in Manhattan, Kansas on November 15, 2016. Spc. Cruz-Medellin was a satellite communications operator and maintainer with the 267th Signal Company, Special Troops Battalion, 1st Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade at nearby Fort Riley. He was from Prairie Lea, Texas and enlisted in the Army in October 2014. Reports indicate that the civilian authorities were investigating the cause of death but the official cause of death is unknown.

Fort Hood Army soldier Douglas L. Bailey, 24, was found dead October 15, 2016 at his on post home. He was a native of Elmira, New York when he enlisted in the Army and was active-duty military for six years at the time of his death. The funeral announcement stated Douglas Bailey was an “amazing husband and father.” Douglas’ obituary stated he “enjoyed hunting, fishing with family and spending time at the family cabin on Trout Lake. Doug loved to play football and was an avid Buffalo Bills fan. His favorite vacation spot was Myrtle Beach with his family.” The official cause of death is unknown.

“Killeen Police identified 24-year-old Logan Ellis Rainwater as the victim of a fatal motorcycle accident that occurred at the intersection of Clear Creek Road and Janelle Drive in Killeen, Texas on August 1, 2016. Authorities reported that at around 9:15 a.m., the 72-year-old driver of an SUV was traveling southbound on Clear Creek Road when he or she attempted to turn onto Janelle Drive. However, the driver of the SUV failed to yield right-of-way and struck a northbound motorcycle, driven by Rainwater. According to Killeen PIO Ofelia Miramontez, Rainwater was ejected in the collision and the bike struck a white Nissan 370Z at the stop sign. Rainwater was transported to Metroplex Hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced deceased at 9:42 a.m. The driver of the SUV was taken to the same hospital with non-life threatening injuries. According to police, the driver of the SUV will likely be ticketed for failing to yield the right of way. It is unknown if the driver will face more-serious charges such as vehicular manslaughter, however the accident is still under investigation.” –Texas Car Accident News (August 3, 2016)

Army Sgt. Duane Shaw III, 34, was taken to a hospital in nearby Temple, Texas where he was pronounced dead on June 8, 2016. Sgt. Shaw was found unresponsive at his off-post home in Killeen, Texas. Sgt. Shaw enlisted in the Army in December 2005 as a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) specialist. He was assigned to the 8th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood. Sgt. Shaw deployed in support of Operation New Dawn and Operation Enduring Freedom; he earned the Joint Service Commendation Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, a Combat Action Badge and a Driver and Mechanic Badge with Wheeled Vehicle Bar, and other awards and decorations. Sgt. Shaw’s death was the third death reported in one week by Fort Hood officials. Decorated combat veteran SFC Antino Glass died in a fatal motorcycle crash on June 5th and Spc. Bernardino Guevara, Jr. was found dead with a gunshot wound on June 6th in a parking lot on post. Additionally, this was the 12th death reported in the month of June at Fort Hood. On June 2, 2016, nine service members died in a flood water training accident on post.
