Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Stacy Dryden Died of Injuries Sustained in Non-Hostile Incident in Anbar Province, Iraq; Death Ruled Homicide, No Charges Filed (October 19, 2008)

Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Stacy Dryden, 22, died of injuries sustained in a non-hostile incident in Anbar province, Iraq on October 19, 2008. Lance Cpl. Dryden was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom on behalf of the 1st Supply Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group in Camp Pendleton, California. The Department of Defense announced that the incident was under investigation at the time of the press release. Media reports suggested that Stacy died of a suspected head injury she sustained during a wrestling match with a fellow Marine. In one report, a Marine public affairs officer stated that her manner of death has been ruled a homicide, but no wrongdoing was found and no charges were filed. The family expressed their frustration with the investigation of the murder of Stacy and additionally feel that no one was held accountable in an effort to protect the reputation of the Corps.

“They circle the wagons,” she says about how the military handled Maria’s murder and other female soldier deaths. “They are trying to protect their reputation.” And the military is protecting its reputation while struggling to recruit soldiers for an all-volunteer military. –City Beat (March 27, 2012)

Brianna Denison, 19, was abducted by former Marine James Biela in Reno, Nevada on January 20th, 2008. She was subsequently found raped and murdered. According to Joe Biela, James Biela once wore the uniform of a Marine but was kicked out of the service. James Biela was convicted of raping and strangling Brianna and sentenced to death in 2010. Brianna’s family fought for ‘Brianna’s Law’ in Nevada and it passed:

The bill mandates a DNA cheek-swab whenever a person is booked for a felony arrest. If the arrest is deemed legitimate, the DNA would be cross-referenced with DNA from other crime scenes to see if the arrestee was involved. The proposal is named after Brianna Denison who was raped and murdered by James Biela in Reno in 2008. Proponents believe such a law may have saved Denison because Biela had a prior felony arrest.

Marine Cpl. Reynold Armand, 21, died of unspecified causes on August 7, 2007 in Balad, Iraq. Cpl. Armand was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom on behalf of the 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. At the time of the Department of Defense press release, the death was under investigation. The outcome of the investigation and official cause of death is unknown.

“Reynold Armand loved football, playing video games and spending time with family and friends. He was proud of his Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage and loved the New York Yankees…He was a 2004 high school graduate and was assigned to Camp Lejeune… Armand so wanted to join the Marines that he persuaded his aunt and adoptive mother Miriam Velez to allow him to enlist before he turned 18. He wanted to follow in the footsteps of the late Victor Velez, Miriam Velez’s husband and Armand’s uncle and adoptive father, a former Marine. ‘He looked up to him, he left to make him proud,’ said Velez.” –In Remembrance of Cpl.
