Baby Found Dead on Side of Highway in North Carolina; Air Force SrA Matthew Theurer Plead Guilty to Involuntary Manslaughter, Sentenced to 40 Years in Prison (2013)

SrA Matthew Theurer, 22, US Air Force, was arrested after the body of his baby was discovered in a bag on the side of a highway on March 12, 2013. SrA Theurer stood accused of dumping the baby’s body about 100 miles away from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina where he was stationed. After Theurer’s baby was discovered and a failed suicide attempt, Theurer confessed to investigators that he found his child unresponsive on February 15, 2013 and attempted to cover up the death. SrA Theurer admitted in military court that he began to downward spiral after the mother of his child moved away and left him to care for the baby by himself. SrA Theurer admitted to leaving the child alone while he went to work; an autopsy report indicated that the child died from starvation and neglect. SrA Theurer pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, negligent homicide, child endangerment, obstruction of justice, and making a false statement. SrA Matthew Theurer was sentenced to forty years in prison, dishonorable discharge, and reduction to E-1.

Russel Douglas was found murdered in his car in a remote location on Whidbey Island in Washington on December 26, 2003. Russel was shot execution style in the head and there were few clues at the scene but the police knew it was a murder because they couldn’t find the gun. It took the police a few years but eventually they got a phone call from someone who said they had information about a murder. Investigators learned that a man by the name of Jim Huden admitted that he wanted to kill someone and did in fact kill someone. Through the course of the investigation, they also learned that Jim, who was married, had been having an affair with Peggy Thomas, a Navy veteran and former beauty queen in Washington. Peggy was the connection to Russel Douglas because she once worked with his wife Brenna at a hair salon and Russel’s wife was renting a home from her on Whidbey Island. When Jim Huden and Peggy Thomas were interviewed by the police, they didn’t admit to anything and would not cooperate. Therefore, detectives didn’t have enough evidence to arrest them. Honoring US Army soldier Kimberly Walker who was murdered in a Colorado Springs hotel room on February 14, 2013 by her boyfriend Army soldier Montrell Mayo. Kimberly was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas and visiting Mayo who was stationed at Fort Carson. After an investigation and autopsy, it was learned that Mayo hit, strangled, and smothered Kimberly after an argument. As a result, Mayo was charged with Kimberly’s pre-meditated murder. Montrell Mayo was convicted of pre-meditated murder in an Army courts martial by a panel of five military officers and sentenced to life without parole.

Sgt. Vincinte Jackson, US Army, was convicted of the brutal murder of co-worker and fellow Army soldier Brandy Fonteneaux. Both Sgt. Vincinte and Brandy were assigned to the 4th Engineer Battalion at Fort Carson, Colorado. Brandy was found stabbed to death in her barracks room at Fort Carson on January 9, 2012. After an investigation, Sgt. Jackson was accused of finding the first unlocked door he could in the barracks, entering, and then stabbing and slashing Brandy Fonteneaux 74 times. Jackson was courts martialed by the Army and found guilty of murder by a jury of eight of his peers but they acquitted him on the charge of premeditated murder. Jackson’s defense lawyers blamed heavy drinking with the combination of anti-depressants leaving him unable to control his own actions. The prosecution scoffed at the defense and accused Jackson of trying doors in the Fort Carson Army barracks corridor until he found one that was unlocked. They deduced that Jackson made the conscience decision to leave his room and walk to Brandy’s room where he stabbed and slashed her to near death. An autopsy revealed Jackson choked her to death to take her out of the misery he put her in. Sgt. Vincinte Jackson was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

In a random act of violence, ex-Marine James Shackelford decided to steal a Mitsubishi Eclipse outside a bar and ended up fatally shooting the driver of the car Christopher Devoy on May 31, 1996 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. James Shackelford was kicked out of the Marine Corps for punching a sergeant in the mouth. He turned to a life of crime robbing banks, stealing cars, and then eventually murder in the course of a robbery. Ultimately three individuals were held responsible for the murder of Christopher Devoy. James Shackelford was arrested for first degree murder. Jeffrey K. and Jeremy Kirby were convicted of murder and their combined sentences totaled more than fifty years behind bars. The ring leader of the murder got off with the lightest sentence. James Shackelford got sixteen years in prison. Shackelford never even got convicted of murder.
