FORT SILL Okla_ Top leaders at Ft. Sill met Wednesday to have an open and candid discussion regarding sexual assaults and harassments and the policies in place to make sure no crime goes unreported.

Over the past two years, Major General Mark McDonald said there have been about 50 cases of sexual assault and harassment. Wednesday’s seminar with top leaders came months before new initiatives set forth by the Department of Defense will take effect. In August, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel outlined several new initiatives to reduce the amount of sexual harassment in the military.

RAISIN TWP.   —  A 31-year-old soldier on leave from the  U.S. Army is lodged at the Lenawee County Jail after he allegedly strangled a  man to death and stabbed another in the shoulder Saturday morning at 2985 Gady  Road, Lot 63, in Raisin Township, according to the Michigan State  Police. The deceased victim is a 20-year-old man from Adrian. The second  victim is an 18-year-old man from Adrian who was treated for lacerations and  released.

FORT WORTH, TEXAS — The U.S. government spent nearly $5 million to court-martial and convict an Army psychiatrist in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting rampage, according to records reviewed by a North Texas television station.

The biggest pre-trial expense in Maj. Nidal Hasan’s trial was more than $1 million for transportation for witnesses, jurors and attorneys, according to Army records obtained by KXAS-TV of Fort Worth and Dallas. About $90,000 was spent to house the witnesses.

LAKE CHARLES, LA. — A 28-year-old Army veteran, who pleaded guilty in June to second-degree murder in the 2010 slaying of a soldier at Fort Polk, has been sentenced in federal court in Lake Charles.

KPLC-TV reports Marcus Carey was sentenced Tuesday to 30 years in prison in the death of Byron Whitcomb, of Whitefish, Mont., and for the attempted murder of another soldier, Howard Alley.

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Spc. Angel L. Lopez, 27, of Parma, Ohio, died Oct. 5, in Zabul province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.

He was assigned to the 201st Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Knox, Ky.

The Department of Defense announced today the death of four soldiers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. They died Oct. 6, in Zhari District, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device.

Killed were:

1st Lt. Jennifer M. Moreno, 25, of San Diego, Calif., assigned to Madigan Army Medical Center, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

Sgt. Patrick C. Hawkins, 25, of Carlisle, Pa., assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Ga.

Sgt. Joseph M. Peters, 24, of Springfield, Mo., assigned to the 5th Military Police Battalion, Vicenza, Italy.

Pfc. Cody J. Patterson, 24, of Philomath, Ore., assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, at Fort Benning, Ga.
