US Army SealFort Sill soldier convicted of sexual misconduct with child

LAWTON — A military judge has found a Fort Sill soldier guilty of sexual offenses against a child, the fifth soldier from the Army post to be convicted of sexual misconduct with a child since July 2012. Sgt. Kristoffer R. Lenning was sentenced to 43 years confinement, reduction to the lowest rank and a dishonorable discharge.

The fort’s leaders have previously declined to comment on the number of such cases. However, in an emailed response Monday, a Fort Sill spokesman said “one assault is too many.”

US ArmyFt. Sill Commander Addresses Growing Sexual Assaults

FORT SILL Okla_ Top leaders at Ft. Sill met Wednesday to have an open and candid discussion regarding sexual assaults and harassments and the policies in place to make sure no crime goes unreported.

Over the past two years, Major General Mark McDonald said there have been about 50 cases of sexual assault and harassment. Wednesday’s seminar with top leaders came months before new initiatives set forth by the Department of Defense will take effect. In August, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel outlined several new initiatives to reduce the amount of sexual harassment in the military.

Pfc. Gifford E. Hurt, Jr., 19, US Army, died of a non combat related accident on January 20, 2010 in Mosul, Iraq. Pfc. Hurt was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom on behalf of the 1st Battalion, 14th Field Artillery Regiment, 214th Fires Brigade, 4th Infantry Division in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. According to the Department of Defense, the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

Army Lt. Col. Dominic ‘Rocky’ Baragona, 42, was killed on May 19, 2003 in Iraq (specific location not provided). A tractor-trailer jackknifed on the road and collided with Lt. Col. Baragona’s HMMWV causing his death. Baragona was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom on behalf of the 19th Maintenance Battalion at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. At the time of the press release, the incident was under investigation.
